Quotes

Facebook used to have a prominent profile section called “Favorite Quotes”, where you could put stuff that mattered to you.

To an extent, they still do.  But it’s buried enough to be hard to find, and it’s at risk of being deleted at a moment’s notice.

So I’m going to put all of those collected quotes on this page, and update it when I have something new… I think you might get a picture of who I want to be from the quotes I save… 🙂

“Some things in life cannot be fixed. They can only be carried.”
— Megan Devine

“Everything happens for a reason . Sometimes the reason is that you’re stupid and make bad decisions.”
— T-shirt belonging to the inestimable Micah Edwards

“Never underestimate the power of a silly idea!”
— me

“I concluded that all religions, including my own, were mythology with no … evidence to support them. Just so you’ll know, there is no evidence of a “heaven.” None. And.. there is no evidence of “hell.” None. And…there is no evidence of a “soul.” I don’t know what a soul is and no one has ever provided me any evidence for what it is or if it exists. Ditto with “angels” or even a “personal god.” So..if no one can provide evidence for these “concepts,” then…I think that is the evidence of “mythology,” no?

Notice I did not say there is no heaven, no hell, no soul. I don’t know that. There may be. I said there is no credible evidence for any of that. And…of course, if there is no evidence for any of those things, they probably don’t exist.”
— Dr. Charles Negy, University of Central Florida

“When presented with the wonders of the Universe, myth and superstition pale in comparison.”
— Roger Reynolds

“…realize that the price that we pay for the right to privacy is that the government simply will not have as much data as it otherwise might. I am willing to live slightly less physically safe to be far, far more free. And I suspect the same of you.”
— Alex Wilhelm, TechCrunch, 8/15/13

“Remember, kids… the difference between ‘screwing around’ and ‘science’… [Adam holds up clipboard] … is writing it down!”
— Adam Savage on MythBusters

“[Atheists] believe there is no rational basis to discriminate on the basis of race or gender. We believe our sex lives are our business, not the government’s. We believe life has the meaning we give it through increasing happiness and decreasing suffering in the world. We believe healthcare is our decision and our doctors’, not the bishops’. We value teaching how to think, not what to think. We value science, over the supernatural, as an explanation for the world around us. We believe, and value, forming opinions based on reason, not authority. We believe moral principles are tested based on their consequences, not on the dictates of ancient books and preachers. We believe we should change our beliefs based on evidence, not make them immune to questions. We believe marriage should be based on love, not hate. And most of all, we believe freedom is based on “We the People,” not “They the Clergy.””
— atheist philanthropist Todd Stiefel

“I think people need to understand this very specific point. Ideas are not sacred. They don’t need to be respected. People need to be respected. ”
— Stiefel

“I think that you shouldn’t be chasing anything except your audience. You shouldn’t be chasing your competition.”
— Geoffrey Darby, TV executive (Nickelodeon, Martha Stewart TV)

“There is no god and that’s the simple truth. If every trace of any single religion died out and nothing were passed on, it would never be created exactly that way again. There might be some other nonsense in its place, but not that exact nonsense. If all of science were wiped out, it would still be true and someone would find a way to figure it all out again.”
— Penn Jillette, “God, No!: Signs You May Already Be An Atheist”

“All of us are going to someone else’s Hell.”
— quoted on a humanist blog

“Jesus lays on that hippie stuff pretty thick. He has lines like ‘Do not repay evil with evil’ and ‘Do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you.’ Really! It’s in that book you hold up when you scream at gay people.”
— Bill Maher

“The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there’s little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides.”
— Carl Sagan

“Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky”
— John Lennon

“Did you ever stop to think and forget to start again?”
— A.A. Milne

“All I want from tomorrow
Is to get it better than today”
— “Jacob’s Ladder”, Huey Lewis & The News

“If you hold your breath, you lose it.”
— Unknown

“Just when you think you know the answers, I change the questions.”
— Roddy Piper

“People want magic. They don’t want truth. And they ignore the fact that the truth is frequently, in many ways, magical.”

“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”
— Stephen Roberts

“When I was young I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be”
— “Kyrie”, Mr. Mister

“Now watch me rise up and leave
All the ashes you made out of me”
— “Ashes”, Embrace

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
