Squirrels Baseball: Is too much good?

Back in the olden days – the Richmond Braves era – there was one Fireworks Game at the Diamond each year.  Then, toward the end, there were two.  And, of course, they were guaranteed sellouts.

This season, the second of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, there will be twenty-one fireworks nights.  As it’s the second season, and the team is coming off phenomenal response in its first season, it’ll be interesting to see if that many fireworks nights will be successful… or if fatigue will set in over the course of the season.

In case you were interested in one – or all twenty-one – here are the dates (from the Squirrels’ website):

  • Thursday, April 7th – 7:05 PM vs. New Britain Rock Cats
  • Friday, April 8th – 6:35 PM vs. New Britain Rock Cats
  • Thursday, April 21st – 6:35 PM vs. Altoona Curve

The Squirrels are rolling out their promotional schedule all this week – by the end of the week, every one of their 71 scheduled home games will have a promotion (or two, or three) attached to it.  Loading up on promotions was very much part of their 2010 box-office success – and a solid promotional schedule is key to the Squirrels repeating that success this year.  Of course, so is solid on-field success.  That’s up to the San Francisco Giants… their single-A clubs were very successful last year (Augusta had the 2nd best record in the South Atlantic, San Jose won the first half in the California League as well as the playoff championship), so there’s hope on that front. Smile

Pitchers and catchers report this week.  Major-league pre-season starts in two weeks.  And April 7 is opening night in Richmond.  Seems like the new season got here fast… Smile
