Richmond baseball: It’s Official

The announcement was made tonight. Richmond and San Francisco have signed a 2-year Player Development Contract for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

In the end, you have to wonder – as the Times-Dispatch did – if the lack of plans for a new ballpark scared the Nationals off… especially since Harrisburg just finished a massive renovation of Metro Bank Park.  Harrisburg basically gutted the place and rebuilt inside the shell of the ballpark during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 offseasons.   Is that feasible for The Diamond?  Has anyone asked?

Perhaps by the late summer of 2012, the ballpark situation here will be more permanent – and the Nationals and Squirrels will get together.  I still think it’s a smart marketing move for both teams, and it will still be one in two years.

But the Giants did well by the Squirrels in Connecticut, and in one year here.  So I’m not lamenting having them here – I’m glad they seem to like the city and the franchise.  I’m just looking at the missed opportunity…

Better the Giants you know than the Nationals you don’t, I guess.

We have baseball.  In the end, that’s the real story.

Now, as to a hockey team… Smile
