American Idol 9 Finals: Week 9 Results

Prelude

What will go down as the most dismal season in Idol history ends two weeks from tonight.  Most of the performers continue to treat this like Tuesday Karaoke at Buffalo Wild Wings instead of as a competition for a national recording contract.

Let’s face it… other than Crystal (and she needs some polish), was there a studio-ready pop performer in the Top 12 this year?  No.  Why not?  Because the judges pulled the wrong performers out of Hollywood, and the broken voting system ensured (as it always has, I suppose) that about the only criteria that didn’t matter was the singing.

It may well be time for FOX/19/Fremantle to blow the whole thing up and start over with Idol 2.0 – especially if they can’t come to terms with Ryan Seacrest for next season (which is the rumored reason that an official Season 10 pickup hasn’t been announced).    Perhaps the americanidol.com survey is designed to figure out where to start… or it’s just designed to “prove” to FOX that nothing needs to change.  We’ll find out soon enough.  Comcast’s Fancast.com is reporting that Elton John turned down $33 million to take Simon’s chair.  Wow.  I’ll do it for about 99% less… and I’m only about 1oo% less notable… 🙂

The good news – maybe, as they’re not perfect – is that Dial Idol thinks Crystal is safe… but isn’t going so far as to call tonight’s elimination victim.  So let’s find out… as we embark on 57 minutes of padding on the way to the 3 minutes that matter… TONIGHT~!?

Showtime – 9:00 pm Eastern

A very cinematic open, which even brought back the “Search for a Superstar” tagline… as well as a movie-style opening credit montage… gee, would you ever guess this was “Songs From The Movies” week?

And with the clap of a clapboard…  *cue the music*

Hey, they dug up Mark Thompson to introduce Seacrest tonight!

We get the vote total (“over 37 million” served), the highest of the season, and a rundown of tonight’s singers… Bon Jovi, Fantasia, Daughtry (but not Jamie Foxx?)… and Seacrest introduces the judges… but there’s no time to waste…

Here’s Fantasia, live on stage, singing “Bittersweet”… and giving a quick update on her life and album… before we go to…

Break…

Back with the Final Four seated on stools at center stage, which puts their backs to the big screen and the Useless Ford Video.  Clearly, an act of mercy.

Seacrest reminds us that next week is Hometown Week for the Top 3… which provokes another B-roll… including a national appearance for a clip of Richmond’s now-former FOX News anchor Curt Autry (from Elliot Yamin’s hometown week).  Hometown week details, including that all-important AT&T Store visit (blargh), will be on the Idol website shortly after the results.  The finalists get to talk about what they’d do with their hometown weeks…

Top Four family members are sitting on the couches tonight – which means we’re going to have a VERY emotional elimination in about 40 minutes.

Dim the lights, here we go…

  • Michael and Casey get their readbacks on their duet from Ryan… then Crystal and Lee get theirs.  Each duo talks a bit about the song choices.
  • After the vote… Casey is safe.  (The dancing for joy has started at VFTW – they’re having a great season)  But for me, this is a bit surprising (well, at least in terms of performance).  Casey joins his family on the couch.  I will consider this evidence in favor of my complaint, above, about broken voting. 🙂

More results, and (Chris) Daughtry, to come… but first, a break…

And here they come… Daughtry, live, with “September”… Seacrest ruins the moment by asking the judges what the finalists can learn from the success of a former Idol finalist… the judges have proven they don’t know…  🙂

Hey, let’s take a break again…

Back with the three finalists who haven’t gotten their results, they’re at center stage… dim the lights… here we go…

  • Michael gets his solo readback… but no results…
  • As Lee gets his readback… but no results…
  • Meaning that Crystal gets her readback… and Ryan moves on…
  • Michael is asked to wait, but…
  • Lee is safe, and is off to the couches to sit with his family.
  • This does not mean that Michael and Crystal are the Bottom Two, but it does mean that one of them is leaving.

But first, FOX has to collect a few hundred grand, so we go to break…

…and we’re back with the real ratings draw (or so FOX hopes)… Bon Jovi with “Superman Tonight”.  For the first time in a while, all of the “name” musical performances were live.  I’m shocked… 🙂

Michael or Crystal will be sent home, but first… a break…

Before we get the last member of the Top 3, Seacrest kills some time talking to the announced survivors… then we dim the lights…

  • Crystal is safe.
  • Your Top 3 are Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, and Casey James.
  • Michael is going home tonight, but not for an Idol visit.

Cue the “going home” montage… oh, Ryan… why ask Kara to give Michael advice?  Geez…

Michael wraps it up with “Will You Be There”… and then says goodbye to the judges.

A whirlwind week starts for the Top 3… trips home, lots of footage being shot, AND they have to prepare for two songs each next week.  The penultimate round starts Tuesday at 8/7c.  No word on whether there’ll be a theme… we go to credits (early!)… your late local news is next. 🙂
