End of a Richmond institution

It was made official yesterday… the last time you’ll be able to shop at a Ukrop’s store in Richmond will be May 7.

Starting next Saturday, through May 8, the new owners will close 4 Ukrop’s on a Saturday night, and reopen them as Martin’s 9 days later.

Interestingly, while I’m making note of this, I never really got into Ukrop’s – except for the breakfast pizza we sometimes got at WellPoint – so I’ll be curious to see if I like Martin’s better.  My closest Ukrop’s becomes Martin’s on April 26.  I’ll definitely check it out.

One major change: the two quirks that defined Ukrop’s (no Sunday hours and no alcohol) will both go away once each store has the Martin’s name on it.

Ironic that the announcement comes before the last Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K.  There are a lot of folks wondering if it’ll be the Martin’s Monument Avenue 10K next year.
