American Idol 8 Finals: The Semifinal (Round 10)

We’re down to three generic white guys (says the generic white guy – and if you want to say two “generic” and one “not so generic”, that works)… and since there’s just 8 days left until Adam Lambert is crowned (do you really expect any other result?) at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live… this is the semi-final… this is Hometown Heroes week… this… is a supersized 64-minute broadcast (number 300!)… and THIS… is American Idol! *music cue*

It’s two songs per singer (they can definitely get 6 songs in without having to muzzle the loquacious judges, especially with 64 minutes tonight)… one chosen by the judges, one by the singer.  This could be… interesting…

Danny Gokey – “Dance, Little Sister” (Terence Trent D’Arby, chosen by Paula Abdul) – Umm… OK, this is a bit more interesting from Danny than we’ve seen in a while.  He’s performing for once instead of just singing… now let’s hope he avoids The Shriek… and he did avoid it.  One of his best performances of the season.

Kris Allen – “Apologize” (OneRepublic, chosen by Randy Jackson and Cousin Oliver Kara DioGuardi) – Didn’t Archuleta do that song last year? A little TOO karaoke for me… far too similar to OneRepublic’s version… originality is key here, and this wasn’t it.  Technically sound, but… and a little manufactured controversy between Simon and Kara.  Just what we DON’T need…

Adam Lambert – “One” (U2, chosen by Simon Cowell) – And Adam bridges between a bit of faithfulness to the song (although he really can’t do Bono’s voice) and quite a bit of performance.  A little shrill in the middle, eh?  Nicely done, overall…

Halftime Scoreboard: Danny / Adam / Kris – Kris needs a blockbuster in the second half of the show to survive… after this Idol Gives Head Back update from Vote For The Worst’s favorite FarmBot, Carrie Underwood… ok, seriously… malaria nets are a good cause… help if you can… round two (singer’s choice) starts… after the break…

Danny – “You Are So Beautiful” (Joe Cocker) – Danny starts in the Product Placement Red Zone… let’s hear him take on the distinctive sound of Joe Cocker… and he immediately didn’t even try to use the original arrangement… good move… I think the arrangement was better than the singing, but it wasn’t bad… a little wobbly at the start… just not quite up to the first song.

Kris  – “Heartless” (Kanye West) – Good performance, and it’ll be far more memorable than the first one.  I have my doubts that it’s enough to get him to the final… if this is the last stand, it’s one he can be proud of.

It’s a shame that Seacrest, on-air, has to remind the divas judges who the show is about…

Adam – “Cryin’” (Aerosmith) – Product Placement time again! OK, Adam doing Aerosmith does make sense… a little over-the-top at times, but at this point, we know that’s Adam.  Not his best, but more than enough to get him to the final.

FINAL SCORE: It’s the Adam-Danny finale everyone predicted.  Kris hurt himself with “Apologize”… and I think that Adam and Danny simply have more fans.   I still think Adam’s long-term future is on Broadway, but his immediate future is a confetti shower next Wednesday.

We determine the two finalists tomorrow night at 9e/8c.  Jordin Sparks and Katy Perry sing.  The shortened season finale of Fringe is next.

Postscript: The OTHER singing contest – Eurovision 2009 – started tonight in Moscow.  Where else can you hear people cheering for Malta and Azerbaijan… and they have a chance!  And listen  for “Nul Points” – it’s the Eurovision way of saying “EPIC FAIL”… 🙂
