American Idol 8 Finals: Round 9

Word is that, because the judges are so self-absorbed that they don’t know when to shut up, instead of two songs per singer tonight, each performer gets one solo… and one duet with another competitor, which won’t be awkward at ALL… well, we’re in the homestretch now, and the finale is just two weeks away… this is your final four… this is Rock Week (with Slash!)… and THIS… is American Idol! *music cue*

We’re off to a good start… one of the Idol towers on stage at Television City has partially collapsed, curtailing dress rehearsals… that after the stage manager took a fall down a 20-foot staircase, and a ride out of Television City on a stretcher… so if you believe in omens, hang on to your hats… it could be a bumpy ride…

Solos first…

Adam Lambert – “Whole Lotta Love” (Led Zeppelin) – With a voice that suits a song written for Robert Plant, this should be a slam dunk… There’s only one thing to say: he nailed it.  Possibly his best performance of the series.

Did Seacrest just say that Allison is doing Joplin?  Forget “omens”, this may be the best week in a long time… but first… the Product Placement Red Room interview… under the broken Idol sign…

Allison Iraheta – “Crybaby” (Janis Joplin) – Another vocal resemblance that should make this simple… Another spot-on performance.  This was the genre Allison was meant to perform.  Well done.

Instant Barometer: Adam / Allison

So we switch to a duet in mid-stream?  OK… I’m confused…

Danny Gokey / Kris Allen – “Renegade” (Styx) – Seemed like Kris got more of the song, which makes sense… Danny’s out of his element here.   Both were OK… I don’t think this did anything for either of them.

Instant Barometer: Adam / Allison / Kris / Danny

Now you’d figure they’d do the other duet.  You’d be wrong.

It turns out that the incessant Glee commercials are for a one-off “preview” – the show airs May 19 (finale night) and then goes away until September.  Where it will fail miserably.

Meanwhile, back on stage… Kris gets the Product Placement Red Zone treatment…

Kris Allen – “Come Together” (Beatles) – A little too much shouting in place of singing for my taste… again, it was OK, but that’s as far as I can go with this.

Instant Barometer doesn’t move: Adam / Allison / Kris / Danny

Up next… the Widower Gokey does Aerosmith.  Yes, Idol does make strange bedfellows…

Danny Gokey  – “Dream On” (Aerosmith) – This week’s VFTW favorite gets his turn… and does a somewhat stripped-down version of the Aerosmith anthem… got a little shrieky at the end (but so did the original)… better than I feared… not bad, actually…

Instant Barometer: Adam / Allison / Danny / Kris

Adam and Allison… this could be a defining moment… next…

Adam Lambert / Allison Iraheta – “Slow Ride” (Foghat) – More of a double-solo than a true duet… but the guy who’s probably going to win this year and the girl who’s going to be be the breakout star from this season did exactly what you would have expected.  Best of the night.  If there’s any justice, you just watched the two finalists duet…

Instant Barometer doesn’t move again: Adam / Allison / Danny / Kris

Fearless prediction: Kris is going home.  Kris and Danny are splitting the same segment of the fanbase, and I think Danny gets just enough to stay.

Results tomorrow night at 9e/8c, as Daughtry, No Doubt, and Paula Abdul *all* perform.  Fringe is next.
