American Idol 8 Finals: Round 5

It’s “year of your birth” week… so what crazy song choices will we get tonight?  We’ll find out soon enough, because… THIS… is American Idol! *music cue*

THEY DITCHED THE STUPID INTRO!  Ahem… no big entrance for the judges.  Yay.

I do NOT need to see Idol judge baby pictures.  Please move along.

Danny Gokey (1980) – “Stand By Me” (Mickey Gilley, Bill Withers) – OK, let’s bend the rules a bit… couldn’t they have insisted on original songs from their year of birth?  Um… uh oh?  The first part of the song was as weak as anything he’s done.  And the rest was only marginally better.  I can’t see him hitting the Bottom Three, but this was NOT where we needed to start.

I am officially tired of the judges being told who to pimp.  They clearly weren’t reacting to what we just heard.  Speaking of pimpage, it’s the Product Placement Red Room for Kris…

Kris Allen (1985) – “All She Wants To Do Is Dance” (Don Henley) – OK, I hate the arrangement.  I rarely say that, but… I really hate the arrangement.  The singing was OK.  I wasn’t really impressed, but it was decent.

Instant Barometer: Kris / Danny

Lil Rounds (1984) – “What’s Love Got To Do With It” (Tina Turner) – Now this is more like it.  No affectations, just a solid performance.  She needed this one… and brought it home well.

Instant Barometer: Lil / Kris / Danny

Anoop goes to the Product Placement Pimpage Red Room…

Anoop Desai (1986) – ”True Colors” (Cyndi Lauper) – Interesting song choice… I was afraid he’d try to veer toward the Phil Collins cover, but he didn’t, and the song was better for it.  Depending on what follows, though, I don’t know if it is enough for him to avoid the Bottom Three…

Instant Barometer: Lil / Anoop / Kris / Danny

Looking at the clock, the last 4 singers are going to be rushed like mad… or the show’s going 10 minutes over…

Scott McIntyre (1985)“The Search Is Over” (Survivor) – No piano?  Wow.  I think I regret the judges’ pushing him in this direction.  That was all over the place… screechy and weird and… he’s in BIG trouble.

Instant Barometer: Lil / Anoop / Kris / Danny / Scott

Allison Iraheta (1992) – “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (Bonnie Raitt) – She did what the judges asked… took a song outside her comfort zone and made it her own.  I really enjoyed it.  I fully expect the Idoltard voting public to kick her out anyway.  Allison, don’t let Kara write for you when you do make that first album… PLEASE…

Instant Barometer: Allison / Lil / Anoop / Kris / Danny / Scott

Matt Giraud (1985) – “Part Time Lover” (Stevie Wonder) – I kind of like the slight edge he put on the song… there was a bit of shouting, but otherwise a good performance… middle of the pack…

Instant Barometer: Allison / Lil / Anoop / Matt / Kris / Danny / Scott

If you Tivo’ed this, you’re screwed, as it’s 8:59 PM Eastern going into the last break.  I hope you remembered to set an overrun…

Adam Lambert (1982) – “Mad World” (Tears For Fears) – I don’t know that my opinion matters, as Fox/19 are pushing him to the hilt.  That said, this was OK. A bit shrieky, but OK.  I don’t think it deserved the love that Cowell threw at it.

Instant Barometer: Allison / Lil / Anoop / Adam / Matt / Kris / Danny / Scott

MY BOTTOM THREE: Well… I guess it’s obvious – Kris, Danny, Scott

AMERICA’S BOTTOM THREE: Because Idoltard voters are stupid – Allison, Lil, Anoop

GOING HOME: Possibly Anoop, more likely Allison

SAVE POTENTIAL: Moderate.

Man, Fox affils are going to be pissed, their late local news won’t air until about 10 past the next hour… unless Fringe is chopped.  See you tomorrow at 9/8c with Flo Rida and Kellie Pickler… and the elimination of someone who probably doesn’t deserve it.
