American Idol 8 Finals: Round 1 (13 performers)

So after adding the extra performer last week… what shocking swerves await us tonight.  Find out… because… mostly live from Hollywood… the journey starts now… THIS… is American Idol! *music cue*

With Michael Jackson announcing his not-quite-a-comeback, the theme is… Michael Jackson.

I guess Mark Thompson needed something to do with Hole In The Wall tanking, so he’s doing the big-time judge and host intro tonight… the judges are back in front of the (squealing and borderline lunatic) fans.

And now… the next twist.  It’s a double-elimination week.  Two go home tomorrow.

Lil Rounds — “The Way You Make Me Feel” — LEADOFF? Oh my… Nice job – I think this version works almost as well as MJ’s original.  She was safe anyway, so going leadoff probably won’t hurt…

Scott McIntyre — “Keep The Faith” — Guess they’re putting the safe singers up early.  Scott goes behind the piano (I think we should get used to this)… a little pitchy at times, dawg… he’s not going anywhere, but this was just OK.  Enough to get through, but he better not do this once we’re down to half-a-dozen or so.  Either Simon’s PMSing or Paula’s been hitting the good stuff. 🙂

The Widower Gokey is next.  How many non-subtle ways will he mention his late wife this week?

Danny Gokey — “PYT” – Started really awkwardly, but finally did make it work.  OK, despite all the dead-wife jokes, it was an enjoyable performance, and he deserves to get through.  And he didn’t mention her tonight.  Good move.

You have now entered… the elimination zone…

Michael Sarver — “You Are Not Alone” – Good voice, a bit of an affected performance.  He needs a home run every week to stay in.  Not sure this was it, especially with the double-elimination tonight.  Paula is sliding into “hot mess” territory.

Jasmine Murray – “I’ll Be There” – She’s in the same situation as Michael – this wasn’t a home run… but it is a nice job.  It may be enough to get her one more week, but we’ll see.

Kris Allen – “Remember The Time” – Scott has the piano, Kris has the guitar. We’d like to thank Kris Allen for his participation in American Idol 8, and wish him well in his future endeavors.  This was rather pedestrian, and rather forgettable.  And why I am I channeling Simon?  Not nearly enough to save him unless there are some major train wrecks ahead…

We leave the elimination zone behind… this is the “screw up and you’ll get passed by” zone…

Allison Iraheta – “Give In To Me” – This girl is going to surprise some people.  I really like the rocker-chick vibe… I like the performance, I think she’s around another week, and I’m rooting for her.

Anoop Desai – “Beat It” — The “not really the extra” finalist (I think he was in and Michael was the extra, but… we’ll never know, right?) Uh oh… if you’re going to do THE iconic MJ song, you better kill it.  He didn’t.  It wasn’t even up to the Fall Out Boy/John Mayer remake.  I think he has enough fan support to get through, but man… don’t do this again… or, will the judges’ piling on be enough to end it tomorrow?

Jorge Nunes – “Never Can Say Goodbye” – The pronunciation issues are rough, but this song covered them up well.  He won’t go too far, but he’ll get through tonight.

Megan Joy Corkrey — “Rockin’ Robin” – Uh oh… the performance was OK… but it was just there… fortunately, it came after two other bumpy rides and looks good by comparison.  I think she’s through, but… signs are hazy for the long term…

We leave the “hanging on a thread” zone and enter the Pimp Zone

Adam Lambert – “Black & White” – The song choice will be enough to make him the Vote For The Worst candidate.  He tried to go over the top and didn’t quite make it.  He’s slightly at risk… but at least it wasn’t another Broadway theatre performance… although I wonder if VFTW will go for someone the judges pimp so heavily…

Matt Giraud – “Human Nature” – More piano.  I kinda feel sorry for the stagehands who had to haul it off and back on stage twice tonight.  Nice, pleasant, and safe.  Nothing special, but he’ll be back.

Alexis Grace – “Dirty Diana” – She’s getting the non-standard phone number.  This will negate the Pimp Spot, for sure.  Good way to end the show, and she’s coming back, phone number issues or not…

And if you haven’t heard about it yet, dial 1.866.IDOLS13 if you’re over 18.  I haven’t.  But according to Seacrest on his syndicated radio show, it’s a not-very-good phone sex line.

The post-show note about a rules change is probably about the Bottom Three Singoff that’s being added tomorrow night – word is that the final decision on who gets punted goes to the judges, not the callers.

SHOULD BE SINGING FOR THEIR LIVES:  Kris, Anoop, Jorge

WILL BE SINGING FOR THEIR LIVES: Kris, Jasmine, Michael

FLIRTIN’ WITH DISASTER: Adam

Your late local news… next.  Tomorrow’s results show is the second hour on Fox (after Lie To Me).  I’ll be running the board at 93.1 the Wolf for Richmond basketball, so my comments will come later in the evening.

EDIT: VFTW went for Megan.  I knew they couldn’t vote for anyone the judges pimped that hard, even Adam Lambert. 🙂
