No more “That Place”?

I just got a phone call that stunned me.

The venue that I have called “That Place” for the last 3 1/2 years, ComedySportz Improv Theatre Richmond, is apparently closing.

What I’m hearing is that a press release hit the Times-Dispatch tonight with the announcement.  Anecdotal evidence is that something’s up – the CSzR website is down (the domain registration expired last week)… there are no tickets on sale at for CSz shows past this weekend… and a couple of Facebook comments found in a quick search indicate that *something* happened.

If this is accurate, I have several reactions.  Obviously, there’s one person I don’t feel terribly sorry for.  However, it means there will be no full-time improv comedy venue in Richmond on a regular basis any longer… and there are some very good people who were performing there because it was the only place in town for improv, and now they don’t have an outlet for their passion.

It’d be interesting to see if one of Richmond’s theatres or clubs looks to add a regular improv night to fill the vacuum… and it’ll be even more interesting to see the mood at Toad’s Place one week from tonight when Second City brings its touring sketch/improv show back for their second annual visit.

Edit: Confirmed – they close March 28.  Once again – wow.
