Three songs per contestant – Judges’ Choice, Producers’ Choice, Singers’ Choice.
First up, the judges…
David Archuleta – “And So It Goes” (Billy Joel, selected by Paula Abdul)
Nicely done. It’s a song that needs the slow, measured delivery he gave it. We’re off to a good start.
Syesha Mercado – “If I Got You” (Alicia Keys, selected by Randy Jackson)
She said it’s her favorite artist, and a song she knows. A good performance, not her best, but entertaining.
David Cook – “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (Roberta Flack, selected by Simon Cowell)
Cowell has been saying that Cook’s too comfortable. Let’s see what he does with something so far out of his wheelhouse… um… WOW… I still think Archuleta’s going to win… but if Cook wins Idol, *THIS* was the song that won it for him. Outstanding rendition.
Next, the singers choose the songs…
David A. – “With You” (Chris Brown)
If his grasping stage daddy picked this one for him… not good. Archuleta’s style doesn’t work with a mid-to-up-tempo R’n’B song like this one. This may have hurt him a bit.
Syesha – “Fever” (Peggy Lee)
Miscast song, take 2. “Fever” is a sultry, ballsy torch song. Syesha doesn’t do sultry or ballsy. Good as far as it goes, but not a good showcase.
David C. – “Dare You To Move” (Switchfoot)
He didn’t do a straight cover of Switchfoot, which is good… he had a rough start, but got into the song. Not his best, but solid. I think these two performances sandwiching two less-than-stellar ones may help him quite a bit.
Finally, Nigel Lythgoe’s choices…
David A. – “Longer” (Dan Fogelberg)
I like this song… so… he’s on dangerous ground. 🙂 But he got this one right. Best of his three songs tonight, and a good showcase of his best style as a balladeer.
Syesha – “Hit Me Up” (Gia Farrell from “Happy Feet” soundtrack)
Nice job. It was good, but nothing that jumps out… probably best of the three, but I don’t think it was enough tonight.
David C. – “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” (Aerosmith)
Well now… taking it home in style, Cook is. Tonight was Cook’s star turn. Two big performances and one “solid”. He won the night. Can he carry it through the finale?
THE BIG FINISH: David A. looked better in “With You” the second time around, but it wasn’t his best night… Syesha needed to score with all three songs, and she just plain didn’t… and David C. may have positioned himself to be the seventh American Idol tonight.
The FEARLESS PREDICTIONS don’t change. Syesha won’t make it to the final, and Archuleta will probably still win this thing. But I’m not as sure about Archuleta as I was the last few weeks. If Cook can keep this roll going into the finale, he can steal the title.
To be honest, though, I’m hoping Archuleta does win. He’s the kind of artist 19 Entertainment can shape, while Cook would be better off on his own after the Idols tour.
