They switched up from Lennon/McCartney II to a Beatles Night… I wrote up my comments as it happened…
Amanda Overmyer – “Back in the USSR”
A bit ragged, a bit forced. She’ll be a good rocker, but I don’t think she’s an American Idol. OK.
Kristy Lee Cook – “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”
Awkward arrangement, complete disconnect from the song. She’s pretty much set up to leave barring a disaster later. She talked about proving something to Cowell. I don’t think she’ll have a chance to.
David Archuleta – “The Long and Winding Road”
Strong and a bit more confident than last week. Good, not great. Should make it back for another week.
Michael Johns – “A Day in the Life”
High note issues, and wandered all over the place. A good shot at the Bottom Three tomorrow night. Might survive, but not by much.
Brooke White – “Here Comes The Sun”
Slow start, picked up speed. I’m still waiting for someone to really grab a song and make it theirs, but she did more than enough to come back.
David Cook – “Day Tripper”
Ask and ye shall receive. This guy is going to be a star, although I don’t know if he can win AI. Best of show so far.
Carly Smithson – “Blackbird”
Two solid performers back-to-back to rescue the evening. Good range, solid arrangement, and she hits a home run.
Jason Castro – “Michelle”
Solid. Middle-of-the-pack, good enough for a return trip.
Syesha Mercado – “Yesterday”
You have to have guts to choose this song. She overshot by a long distance. It was thin and a bit weak. This could be another Bottom Three moment for Syesha. I have no idea what the judges saw in this.
Chikezie – “I’ve Just Seen A Face”
I was originally convinced he’d be cannon fodder. The last couple of weeks have changed that. This performance showed that he’s got something, and should be around next week.
Ramiele Malubay – “I Should Have Known Better”
She did know better. Big improvement from last week puts her in mid-pack and she should be OK.
AND THE RECAP: Amanda sounded better by comparison as we get to the Big Finish. Kristy’s bored/boring style is going to do her in. David A. was good, I’d like to see him tackle a different style. Michael’s in BIG trouble. Brooke was OK, and should come back. David C. stands out. Carly was second-best, solidly. Jason has the teen idol thing going, and a decent performance. I don’t get Syesha’s performance. Chikezie connected with the song, if not the judges. Ramiele closed with another “OK performance”. There was too much “OK” tonight.
BEST: David Cook, Carly Smithson
BOTTOM THREE: Kristy Lee Cook, Michael Johns, Syesha Mercado
SHOULD GO HOME: Kristy Lee Cook
